Tattooing overweight people
I started a sleeve on a friend. I only did some line work so far but the lines are shit to say the least. I couldn't get a solid line, only when I stretched the skin with a short stretch I did 1 inch lines that were solid but still quite thin for a 9 liner
Is it harder to tattoo fatter people? Any tips/advice for the next sitting would be welcome

Some people are just harder to tattoo than others. I haven't noticed it to be so much a factor of weight as skin texture and thickness. It might be a little harder to get a good skin stretch on some parts of a person who is heavier, but I never really noticed it. I've definitely tattooed some heavier folks where their skin just loved ink, they were really easy to get good lines and color on.

Stomachs are a nightmare on fat people, stretch, get them to help you stretch as well, up the volts and occasionally i have had to alter my depth.

i think a fat guy's skin take ink in the same as the same guy if he weren't fat.
but the stretch would be different to get the ink in right if fat, cuz more fat tissue

Thanks, I think I need to learn more stretching techniques, I could only manage enough stretch to do a 1 inch line ffs
I was thinking of using my shader as it has a longer throw maybe it might penetrate the skin easier. I have a RW rotary but still afraid to try it for lining

I'd avoid using your shader for lining 'as is'. The front spring will have more flex than your liner and if its set up right it'll be running about 70% of your liner speed. Liners need to be fast and punchy.

Just remember when you are stretching any canvas you can feel the vibration when you hit the right depth, pay attention and you'll see what I mean. Like with all variables you will have to adapt speed depth and stretch, once you feel that tingle on your stretch you'll have solid lines

Thanks gm74, the problem is I only got that feeling with little 1 inch stretches which is crappie for lining
I've see tattooists just grab the arm from behind and tattoo no problem. I'll try more spring tension on Saturday and see how it goes

well it sounds like overall, if someone with more rolls then a French bakery and more chins than a Chinese phone book comes along and wants a full sleeve it'll be a run for your money

If you are doing the inside arm then ya put your hand under and puller. Make sure the arm is fully stretched to assist and be careful as I have bruised forearms before by gripping and holding or stretching to tight. I also had a canvas with super stretchy rubber like skin, he could pull his skin off his body at least 3 inches but seriously more like 5. I struggled and struggled then did the tat one inch at a time as that'd all I could stretch, I ended up lining it all with a one and then sculpting with a three. At some points his skin bounce would keep up with the machine lol i thought my eyes were buggin out. kids been waiting months as i dont want to do his calves after the time spent on his arms. Just remember do what you have to to be pleased with your work, you may have to get creative haha
