How long should a front spring look in good shape before it looks likes this. In the photos does it look like too much voltage or is there other factors to look at?Burning front spring Dsc_0011

I suppose it all depends on how much you use the machine.
My springs went like this on my sharpz hornet last year, after changing the springs and trying to retune it, all I would get was sparks so I changed the capacitor and it went back to normal.

In not 100% sure but i think it could be a few things,
Capacitor blown.
Too much voltage.
Gap too small.
Machine not tunes properly.

Im sure someone with more experience will correct me if im wrong.

No probs thanks. It hasn't really been used that much but it did happen shortly after I put on new springs

That spring was from powerline and it was on a Ronnie Starr machine from powerline too. I'm hitting the sack now but will get a picture tomorrow after work. Though I did just retune it tonight for less tension and bigger gap. Originally I was retuning it for a bigger gap but there was too much tension to run the machine unloaded at 7 volts when I increased the gap

get a lose capacitor of the same size and hold it against te srews from your binding posts. when it runs better and stops sparking it is the capacitor.

Remove the old capacitor first because if you hold another against it (in parallel) you will double the micro farad, if you put it in series it will give you half of the total micro farad value of the two.

You wont have to. You will notice that the sparks stop. Than you can remove and replace the old one.

But if the old cap is ok and you add another cap then the machine could run faster or slower as caps can change how a machine runs, dont overlook badly adjusted point gap / springs, I have created sparks on new machines by messing about with too much rear spring tension and small gap, just saying Smile

It must have been sparking quite a lot to burn like that? I'd agree with some others here in suspecting the capacitor first. Which could be a bad cap, but it could also be a bad solder joint or a broken wire under the shrink wrap.

Not saying it couldn't be just spring tension or contact adjustment, but I'd assume you tried fixing those when you were seeing the sparks.
