Mixing Greywash Empty Mixing Greywash

Post by tyler300888 Tue Jun 14, 2016 6:33 pm

Just wondering whats everyone's  preference for mixing their grey wash is.

Do you mix in the caps or pre mix into bottles?

What do you dilute it with? Would a mix of witch hazel and water be ok?

I know, lots of questions, but any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I know of a tattooist that swears by imperial ink grey washes, not sure what suppliers stock it. Almost sure you need to be registered in order to buy silverback inks, but it seems popular with any I've been to..

i haven't gone lower than 10% i'm gonna have to try the 3 and 6%
water/witch hazel makes it so thin...
i wonder if there is a thickener you can add

No quater: thanks mate, gonna give your mix a go with maybe an added 75% bottle.

Reset: iv heard glycerine is the way to go to thicken inks, dunno if id be able to use a grey wash that's thickened though.

i've heard of that too about glycerin, ima give it a shot one of these days

btw i use 100% witch hazel to thin, 66,50,33,25,10. thats what i do, started recently, and really don't know shit. but i gotta try that super light under 10%. sounds good.

my dumbass a long time ago tried mixing white and it turned out funky as hell.

i wouldn't use this method in the long run. and i have had to dilute, in water, on the run, when i had no choice.
with each dip you are changing the concentration of the ink and the shade.
consistency will drop as time passes. it is also good for one session only.
the 4 cup method sounds extremely risky, i think ink tube capillary action cannot be that consistent, because of the chance where you think it is light cuz you dipped x number of times but once you hit the skin, its darker than you thought, yikes, AWKWARD... somebody correct me if i am wrong in thinking this.

you can do a lot with handspeed but you gotta know the ink and its gotta be consistent

i dont buy premade because its costs more, and diluting different concentrations is not rocket science and you can make it exactly how you want.

this is based on my logic, and not experience, so feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

well a few people i know also use this method on a daily basis with no problems...

yes make your own its not rocket science but you can't make each shade exact each time

i prefer remade now as its just less hassle

I like 60% distilled water 40% witch hazel as my base for mixing in the cap or making my own washes. Different brands break down differently for washes, some you can use just water, some need a little alcohol in them to smooth them out .

I use pretty much the same method as Mack, 1 cup solid black and 3 or 4 cups witch hazel...seems to work fine for the size of pieces im doing although i'd imagine if i had to do a large piece with more uniform shades it could be a probelm...

Just a thought here...the thing about constant shades of mixes (which sort of makes sense) ignores the fact that for soft greywash tones and blends, the 'colour' is built up through multiple light passes. Like drawing / painting with ink, each time you layer you increase the intensity, as ink is translucent. The mixes are just dilutions offering the chance to use dispersed droplets of black. Enough passes (and I'm not suggesting aiming for this level of skin trauma) and you'd end up at black.

I found that with the Silverback ink that unless you go real light and build (layer) your shades up you can hit black real quick with #3 & #4.

Mixing consistently is good to get familiar with your set up, but let your eyes work out the tonal values to determine whether 'more' is required. If less is required...then you've fucked it already, unless that tattoo eraser has hit the market yet scratch
