OK So I took the hints and stopped posting my practise work, although it's continued (and I enjoy it). I've still been reading from the sidelines.

With registration out the way I put this on today, based on one of my drawings (that shamelessly pulls ideas from other places).

Nervous? Yes
More difficult than anticipated? Yes
Happy with it? No, but some good learning was going on

I got over zealous with the 4F that I used to start picking out some dark areas and ended up 'lining' bits that shouldn't be lined. Plus the shading went in grainy and I was struggling with details. These are my biggest gripes but other imperfections are pretty obvious too. I think the angle of the photo makes it look shorter and wider, its to the stencil as per the sketch. Its 18cm tall on a calf: 4F + 9M1

However, I enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one, hopefully with colour and 'real lining'.

your drawing needs improvement....yes your tattoo does resemble the drawing but the drawing is poor......you should look at other tattooed refereances with the same topic to see what why they do things

Yes I think you're completely right about 'rushing'.

The drawing I'm less concerned with as I literally threw the shading in in 5 minutes, just to get an idea of light source direction. The original line drawing is tight.

BUT the tattoo has a LOT of weaknesses and I appreciate the feedback...onwards and upwards.

ok , well my advice and this is advice not an opinion , is draw with a pencil and paper because shading with a pencil can be very good practice for shading with a machine

i know you said the line work was tight , but i honestly cant see how , because the drawing is off anyway , her eyes are different shapes and sizes in the drawing , and the eyes in the drawing and tattoo are completely different , it might just be my ocd but i can pick out a few things in the design thats are off

I suppose mist has already been said,,, it is important to have good reference,, the tattoo does look untidy but so does the reference,, I suppose you found out practice skin is different to real skin,, your machines may work ok on it but not in human skin....
