burning question
here's a burning question, that i have not been able to find the answer to.
and i bet no one has a clear answer.
why can't those hurricane/monsterpoint/whatever cheapo import digital power supply run rotaries?
i've found plenty of answers to what to use instead, but none explaining what the deal is. so i guess you cant run a rotary on digital PS, or is just certain chinese junk ones?

Re: burning question
Im not certain but i would imagine it would have something to do with not getting a clean constant supply of current. I dont think the cheapee ps are able to push a constant supply of electricity through your circuit. Kind of like an engine, if its not smooth it doesnt run correctly.
Just a guess though so dont quote me on it haha

Re: burning question
It will be due to the start up current and torque of the motor, I have had power supplies in the past which you have to start at 0 volts and gently increase the voltage to make it run, the amperage also increases and many supplies do have a low amperage rating, 6 volt motors are the hardest to run off a cheap power supply as they take more amperage.
A lab type power supply will run just about anything with clean regulated voltage and handle high start torque motors.

Re: burning question
yeah its only certain machines though i have noticed my hurricane wouldnt run my ikarus , or a few others , but my masters voice lab supply will run anything !
Re: burning question
not had a problem with my hurricane running my rotary, but as said may be certain machines

Re: burning question
my ikarus would start then just slow to a stop and i had another cheap clone that it wouldn't run as well but its not a problem anymore coz i threw my hurricane at the wall
Re: burning question
The Chinese cheapie power supplies can run a coil better because coils have a duty cycle, so they only actually use power about half the time. A DC motor draws pretty much the same current constantly, so the voltage regulator and etc in the power supply doesn't get that bit of time when the duty cycle is "off" to dissapate heat. It will overheat and then tank on you. Especially the smaller ones that might run coil machines ok just may not be robust enough to power a rotary very well.
