Traditional needle configurations
Hey all I am new to the forum and to tattooing.
I wanna ask:
What are standard needles used in american traditional work. Liners and shaders.
I just want a go to setup. I am about to order some needles.

Re: Traditional needle configurations
it depends on the size of the design your tattooing for traditional i use loose 9 or 14 liners
shading i like 11 mags and for colour and 7 or 9 round shaders for pokey bits but if your using big needles buy the best you can dont cut corners with any of your stock last of all needles and ink

Like Lou said it really depends on the size of the tattoo, buy the best you can afford. I bought cheap needles once when I first started and they were shit... Never again.
Iv never tried kuro sumi, I use kokkai sumi for line work and solid black.
With the pic you mentioned about doing soon, if it was me tattooing and I was going by that as my reference, I would probably only shade the darker areas and blend it out to skin tone.

Re: Traditional needle configurations
When I first started 30 odd years ago it was all traditional and the most common needles used were 3 liners and 12 rounds... Apparently 7 round for shading was more popular in America,,, the needles were pretty much the same thickness,,, size 12 but they seem righter together at the tips, giving a thinner line.... Melting they solder at the tips of the needles to make the liners a bit thicker gives a nice line..
