Rotary machine benefits Empty Rotary machine benefits

Post by UlfrMunr Sun May 15, 2016 10:32 pm

Hey guys, so I'm lucky enough to work for a guy who gets tattoo supplies and my discount goes a long way haha I'm wondering your opinions on rotary machines? I only have coils right now but I can get a rotary from work pretty cheap so I was wondering what the benefits are.

Cheers

Well one benefit for sure is, that you can adjust Speed easily by regulating voltage.
Lou and kneehigh use rotarories i think.

Some rotaries are good some are rubbish, many people struggle to line with a rotary, I struggled for a while then went back to coils for line work, I am back to my direct drive rotary again now, just love that machine and run it much faster for lining than I did previously.

as soon as i picked up a rotary i was home.
i tattooed a lot with what is basically a crude no give rotary, made in the joint.
when i got out i messed with coils and was lost for a long long time.
i should have made the connection when some of my more advanced homies that started in prison insisted on rotaries. but i wanted to be mr. all around tattoo jerkoff. lotta time and frustration, especially with no one showing me, guiding me. some complex shit. i line with a coil tho, cuz i put so much time and effort, works right now and its a bad ass machine.

you really just have to try it and see. to me adjusting the knob for speed makes more sense than increasing the hit with the magnets. slowing down speed also reduces the hit because of less velocity, regarless of what some think. its simple physics. and i love those needle wheels....

So I'm seeing that it seems like rotaries are better for shading and color fill? I have a coil liner and a coil shader right now so I was thinking maybe if I get a rotary I can have coil liner, rotary shader and set up my coil shader as a color packer.

i love my rotaries i i started on coils and i could if i had to still use one but i just prefer a rotary i find my lining is much better with them , and i like not having to twat about a tune a machine , im ocd so if its not right i have to stop and tune it , which can get out of hand lol ,

you can tune a coil to do perfect colour or shading....rotary is not better in my opinion they are the same...it all depends on the user

how do you have yours set up for lining? machine/speed/give/stroke size?

some claim a rotary can't line as good as a coil. what setup would you reccomend someone who wants to ditch coils and line with rotary?

thanks lou

i run my liner that has a 12 v motor at about 7.5 -7.8 , a bit higher for colour packing and much lower for shading arounf 4 volts -6 volts depending on the machine , and people always praise me on my line work , i dont struggle with them , but you need to understand depth and be consistent to get nice lines no matter what machine your using

My Wayne Taylor direct drive with Faulhaber 12 volt motor now runs at 9/10.5 volts for lining depending what size liner needle I am using, for colour packing I lower the voltage and only use enough volts to put the ink in, sometimes I raise it, sometimes I lower it.

Mine has a 3.5mm cam on it.

Sometimes I use carts, most of the time I use disposable tubes and needle bar.

I still think you need a slower hand speed to line with a rotary.

consistency, slower handspeed, pump up the speed/hit... got it

what about give? depends on technique? no/less give?

i run it low ~5v to do stuff, not lining...

3.5 is the regular medium cam i believe. i'm gonna try a long throw cam for color packer in my prodigy clone, that shameless piece of shit

i got a prodigy clone i really like mine its been running for about 2 years now ,
well direct drives have no give if you want a soft shader get something with a abar i line and pack with 3.5 throw i dont feel the need to find anything longer just hang your needle more

Regarding give on a direct drive, some people use a soft rubber grommet which will give a tiny, tiny amount of give or use carts, the spring in the cart does create a certain amount of give.

So I got my rotary last night and I tested it out on practice skin and I love it. I found my lines were much better and my shading came out pretty nice. I only did a few words and little shapes just to see how it felt. Plus I was using a 3RL for both applications which obviously isn't a great idea.

I only use rotaries..., why? simply because they're lightweight, less vibration, less noise(i would have gone mad if i had with the coil buzz all day...and no tuning whatsoever.....what more do you want?

its fucked up when someone insists on mastering coil and shoves them down you throat.

i thought i saw value in that,

but now i'm not sure.
